Our Raison d'Être Told in Pictures
Pilcrow is dedicated to the celebration of handicraft. This love of small-lot, handmade, exquisite goods extends beyond our wines to the many craftspeople that inspire us with their dedication to the things that they love. This gallery is meant to introduce you to our shared obsessions and add detail to our story.

Maria Teresa Mascarello has been a true mentor and guru especially when it comes to finding power without weight in classic red wine.

Alberto Cozzi Rilegatore in Florence, Italy. Handmade paper and books in the family for five generations.

They make us 10 tasting books each year emblazoned with "pilcrow" and filled with handmade paper from the Amalfi coast.

When the acorns drop at Ghost Block, it is almost time to pick.

"Ford Blue" is all you ever see in Ghost Block. The Hoxsey family only farms with Ford tractors. Tradition.

Warren Winiarski and Nathan Fay - both early teachers of Jonah's. Nathan's view on the region's Cabernet is profoundly important to Ghost Block.

Nathan Fay not only grew grapes for Stag's but also this overlooked gem from Vichon.
Dialing in the Pellenc destemmer is a true artisanal act.

Getting inspired at Cheval Blanc with the incomparable DLynn Proctor.

In years like 2020, Kendall Hoxsey has graciously let us snag some fruit from a 5th row to get a full three tons.
Jean-Michel Comme embodies handicraft in wine and his definition of success is also ours. He's taught us so much.

1955 International Harvester R100. Jonah's grandfather was an IH man, and Nate Fay was too. Fitting.

Jonah's grandfather's farm in Indiana. The barns and the tractors were all red.
For a Hoosier, having your wine served at this institution means one thing...you've arrived (750s and Mags!).

Inglenook from the 60s should make everyone smile like this. John Daniel was light years ahead of his time.

Sara and Kevin Morrison, the owner of Hillwalker. His belief in our shared mission is rare and unwavering.
Seiichi Kamata, proprietor of Kamata Hakensha, matches knives with people. He made one for Jonah that only cuts vegetables--thus pleasing Sara too.
We love using older oak, but when it must be new, it is hard to beat Boutes Grande Reserve for subtle, neutral, supportive oak.

Sara tasting from barrel with Kevin Morrison, owner of Hillwalker, and Toshiaki Wakayama one of the indispensable winemaking coaches we treasure.

Bob Travers at Mayacamas in 1971 - His lens on the Mt. Veeder terroir was crystal clear and free from a heavy hand. We strive for the same.

Bob Travers autographed this magnum. Sipping this at the Mayacamas tasting room transports takes on up the hill and into their vineyard.
Handmade of solid brass, this pen from Machine Era is a pleasure to hold. They etch some for us with our Caslon pilcrow.

We have an infatuation with typeface. We pair a different typeface with each vineyard. Never Papyrus. For obvious reasons.

Massimo and Erin are making modern wines that relish in old-school ways. This bottle was the perfect foil for dinner at Bottega.

Hosteria Giusti in Modena, Italy is the ultimate "pilcrow" restaurant. Four tables in the back of a butcher shop. Old-school, small, and patience is required.

"Boots" and Al Brounstein - their Gravelly Meadow, Red Rock Terrace, and Volcanic Hill deeply inspire Pilcrow's three Cabs.

Elton Slone of Robert Craig Winery and the owner of Granite Lake. His encouragement and support helped launch Pilcrow in 2014.

Looking down from our block of Granite Lake onto the namesake lake itself.

Dunn always reinforces the notion that Howell Mountain can give you a wine that has ballast but eschews extraction.
Few restaurants can provide guests with warm, joyful, and slightly irreverent hospitality like Maple & Ash.

Great restaurants need phenomenal chefs *and* outstanding owners. Few match Ludo Lefebvre and Paul Fleming.

Burgundy winemakers like Maxime and his father Patrice Rion have provided us with insights into how to hone Cab for elegance.
Somms like Chris Farnum not only write extraordinary lists for places like Island House, they write manifestos.

Jean-Michel taught us the art of 'bridging' instead of hedging. This method is on full display in Hillwalker.

An apprentice in a Master Printer's workshop was called a "Printer's Devil." This concept has given us an idea.

Sprezzatura: studied nonchalance; graceful conduct or performance without apparent effort. Kinda describes Ghost Block to a T.
Jeff Toering etched this Code 38 P-Type with the Pilcrow logo. An incredible example of handicraft, care, and the glory of analog.
